VT Grasshopper Workshop Update

Monday, June 29, 2009 21:23

Virginia Tech’s 2009 Solar Decathlon team has recently launched its new website.  lumenHAUS features the developed screen pattern that was studied during the grasshopper workshop held in February 2009.  Following the workshop, Jonathan Grinham and the Virginia Tech Solar Decathlon team continued to develop the script, and have produced a full scale mock-up of the screen.

The screen pattern was inspired by the workshop, which introduced the group to Zach’s tutorial, Creating Surface Patterns Using Bump Maps Created In Photoshop as an input parameter in Rhino’s Grasshopper.  The pattern was subsequently rewritten and further developed to modify the grid, the surface pattern, and add rotational tabs to vary the amount of sunlight penetration into the space.  Enlarged elevations are below.

You can follow their progress through the team’s website as construction progresses.  The house will be on display in September at the National Building Museum’s Green Communitities Exhibit, and in October on The Mall in Washington DC for the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon.

The Eclipsis Screen System is on display now ’til August 23 at the Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke, VA. I went to the exhibit last week and it is amazing!

are the rotational tabs operational? if so, how?

The tabs are fixed. My understanding is that their angle is determined based on a number of criteria- including solar heat gain/ shading and visual transparency based on program requirements.

So who gets to go in after it’s cut and poke all the tabs around to the correct angle?
